A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 15 at St. Rose Cemetery in Alder Brook. May 1, 2021 BROOKFIELD Raymond A. Derda, 74, of Brookfield, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2021, at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. Mr. Derda was born Oct. 30, 1946, in Erie, Pa., the only son of the late Raymond J. and Irene Wiltman Derda. He was a 1964 graduate of Kane (Pa.) High School and immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps. Raymond served during the Vietnam War, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and a Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge, he earned a bachelor’s degree in comprehensive social studies with a Civil War concentration from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Later, he received another bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University. ....

I was curious about the original articles I like obscure, local baseball history like that and last summer, when I was making use of a Newspapers.com trial, I found the original article series, used Google Drive to OCR the text, and assembled from that a private ebook. The last of the eight parts talks about local York County players who had success in the major leagues, like Lefty George and, relevant to Cubs fans, Cliff Heathcote (famous for being traded from the Cardinals to the Cubs between games of a doubleheader between the two teams). Photo provided by Lima Historical Society Joyce Rapp loved history and enjoyed passing that love on to future generations in Lima so that they knew the stories of those who lived in this town, the famous and the not-so-famous. It is that love that is her legacy. Mrs. Rapp passed away peacefully on March 30, 2021 at her home in Lima. She was 96 years old. Mrs. Rapp, a resident of Lima for 55 years, served as the Lima Town Historian from 1997-2008 and returned to that position in 2016. She was named town historian emeritus this past January. “Her work as town historian and also on behalf of recognizing veterans in our town are her legacy,” Lima Town Supervisor Mike Falk said. “She organized our veteran’s pledge program, getting a different veteran to come to a town board meeting each month and start our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and afterward we would present a certificate to the veteran to honor their service.
