The park saw an increase in ‘social trails’ created by visitors, resulting in unwanted impacts. North Carolina residents hit the outdoors in record numbers last year as COVID-19 spread throughout the state and it impacted state parks in new ways that environmental officials are still managing. The state park system welcomed a total of 19.8 million visitors in 2020, which is 400,000 more than the system’s previous high in 2017. “That is because during the pandemic, when a lot of other venues for recreation were closed, people were seeking something that they could do that was active, that was away from their house, where they felt safe during the pandemic,” said Katie Hall, public information officer for the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. ....
A Bessemer City man was shot and killed early Wednesday morning near High Shoals. Gaston County Police responded to the shooting at about 12:45 a.m. at W.H. Kiser Road near Long Shoals Road. The area is about two miles south of the Lincoln County line. Michael Lee Moore, of Bessemer City, was found suffering from a gunshot wound when officers arrived at the scene. Life-saving measures were attempted by police officers until Gaston Emergency Medical Services arrived. Moore, 37, was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center where he later died from his wounds.
