Letters, May 26-28: Park City School District must invest in the arts

District must invest in the arts
It’s been a hard school year for everyone: students, parents, teachers and administrators. The pandemic brought with it difficult decisions, adjustments and sacrifices. While one cannot imagine the weight that went into these decisions, a school district that has a stated vision of “focus and emphasis on the whole child” cannot afford cuts to music education.
Music and the arts are invaluable in providing the social and emotional learning our kids need right now. Many are still only beginning to return to in-person classes, have suffered trauma over the past year and need a place that can provide healing that will positively impact their other academic classes. Students in music classrooms are regularly taught collaboration, self-regulation, self-awareness and decision making. Research also suggests that experiences in the arts contribute to a fully functioning brain and body. Creating music and art is not a luxury for the elite, but ....

Summit County's microtransit minivans set to launch on Monday

Courtesy of the High Valley Transit District
A fleet of nine minivans are set to hit the streets in the Snyderville Basin at 10 a.m. Monday, the first time Summit County’s new High Valley Transit District will offer rides to members of the public.
The minivans are part of a microtransit service officials call “Micro” that will allow users to hail on-demand rides using an app, similar to ridesharing services like Uber or Lyft, but without the cost. The app launched this week and can be found in app stores by searching High Valley Transit and selecting the option with a purple logo featuring illustrated mountains and the moon. ....

Letters, May 15-18: Say no to paid parking at PCMR

Say no to paid parking
PEG Companies and the Park City Planning Commission will be meeting shortly to discuss paid parking along with allowing an (approximate) 84-foot-tall building project which is currently zoned for 35 feet. What is in it for the taxpayers of Park City but the privilege of paying for parking?
Paid parking will increase traffic, not decrease traffic as PEG claims. Many of us will have family members, friends or ridesharing services drop us off and then pick us up. This would require two round trips to PCMR, not one. Please don’t forget the backups (which already are there) onto S.R. 224 and S.R. 248, which will get worse as there is a time factor to pay for parking. I urge the Planning Commission to vote NO on all exemptions for PEG unless they guarantee free parking for the taxpayers of the town of Park City and address the traffic issues. ....

Silver Springs residents are skeptical of a plan to replace the 7 Pink bus route with microtransit vans

A normal ski day for Brian Connolly and his young family involves tromping out of their Silver Springs home in ski boots, walking down their street and through a path maintained by a neighbor almost directly to a bus stop, where they catch a ride on the 7 Pink bus to the Canyons Village base area.
“The bus is a big part of our lives,” Connolly said. “And as my children get older, we’ve heard from other people in our neighborhood who have kids 12 to 14 years old, the bus allows them the freedom to get around. For us, it’s an important part of why we chose to move to Silver Springs.” ....

Letters, April 24-27: Why is the county stripping bus access from a neighborhood that uses it?

It ain’t broke, so don’t fix it
Oh, the irony! Our mayor expects an incredibly busy summer. Basin Rec struggles with parking capacity at popular trailheads. More cars! More people! What to do? I know what: On July 1, let’s discontinue the 7 Pink bus going through Silver Springs, a highly popular fixed bus route used regularly by residents for many, many years. As pointed out by Sarah Altshuler in her April 7 letter to the editor, the “microtransit” option is not an equivalent substitute for our 7 Pink fixed route through Silver Springs.
We Pink bus riders rejoiced when we won this battle in September 2020 after Park City Transit asked for input regarding the elimination of the Pink route through Silver Springs. Why did High Valley Transit completely disregard the wishes of the people, despite overwhelming support for continuing the route through Silver Springs? They need to tell us. ....
