What started as an eight-week community composting initiative has evolved into a long-term affair. The Houston Heights Association (HHA) president Sharon Dearman said the free weekly composting event at the historic Heights Fire Station, 107 W. 12th St., has been extended indefinitely. Every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m., community members can drop off food waste and have it composted for free. The ongoing events are a partnership between the HHA, Zero Waste Houston and Monica Orozco, a 16-year-old West University resident who initiated the effort as part of her Gold Award project for the Girls Scouts of the USA. Orozco was recognized earlier this month by the Houston City Council, which proclaimed July 13 as Monica Orozco Day. ....

A beloved Heights tradition is back on this year after taking a hiatus caused by COVID-19. The Houston Heights Association s 26th Annual Candlelight Dinner & Auction, which has been a popular event for residents and a key fundraiser for the neighborhood organization, is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Saturday, May 1 and will be held in a mostly virtual format this year. Instead of gathering in one place, participating diners will enjoy a gourmet meal and auction in groups of 10 or less at residents homes. The event was scrapped last year because of the pandemic. The City of Houston has begun emerging from the grips of an unprecedented winter storm. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Thursday that electricity had been restored to many residents who had gone without it, in some cases for a day or more, with the city having endured rolling outages since early Monday.
