New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Centre to respond to the allegations of the Chairman of committee on Chardham project linking broadening of the road to the recent flash floods on Dhauliganga river, which damaged Tapovan hydro project in Uttarakahnd. Attorney General K K Venugopal told the apex court that he would file response to a letter of the chairman of a high-powered committee in which several allegations have been made with regard to broadening of the road and the recent disaster in the state. ....

Chamoli: Rescue and restoration work continues at damaged Tapovan barrage, weeks after the glacier burst at Joshimath which triggered a massive flash flood, in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021.
Two more bodies were recovered early Tuesday from the Tapovan tunnel where efforts were underway on the 10th consecutive day to reach workers feared trapped inside after a flash flood in Uttarakhand s Chamoli district. The confirmed death toll in the Chamoli disaster has now mounted to 58 and another 148 people are missing, an official said.
Eleven of the bodies were recovered from the tunnel at the National Thermal Power Corporation s Tapovan-Vishnugad project site, where about 30 people were initially feared trapped. ....

Unscientific cutting of Himalayan soil by infrastructure projects is disrupting the fragile ecology of the region and causing disasters, warned a former official of the Geological Survey of India on Tuesday. The former additional director general of GSI Tribhuwan Singh Pangti, who was associated with the now-demolished Rishiganga hydroelectric project for initial two years as a geologist, said the hydroelectric companies working in the Himalayas have no knowledge of land formation of the region due to which all projects are causing natural disasters. ....
