Uttarakhand s Chamoli on Sunday witnessed a major tragedy after a glacier broke in Dhauli Ganga valley in the Joshimath area triggering a deluge in the Alaknanda river system that washed away hydroelectric station, leaving at least 7 people dead and at least 125-170 people missing in the affected areas. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said the numbers could be higher. A massive operation has been launched to rescue people from the flood-affected areas.

A massive glacier breach in Uttarakhand s Chamoli district caused flash floods in the Dhauli Ganga river, causing large-scale devastation in the upper reaches of the ecological fragile Himalayas. As per reports, a part of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off at Joshimath in Uttarakhandâs Chamoli leading to wide-spread devastation. Between 100-170 people, mostly labourers who were working at a power project in Tapovan-Reni are missing. Seven bodies have been recovered so far. Also, the power project was swept away completely, added state Director General of Police Ashok Kumar while describing the situation as under control.
