TOUGH times call for strong characters, especially if you are a teacher trying to educate students living in hard-to-reach areas during a pandemic.

It is easy for a teacher to teach when the conditions are ideal - the classroom is comfortable, there are enough tables and chairs, every student has a book, stationery and can they see the board clearly.

PETALING JAYA: Students nationwide will return to home-based learning (PdPR) after Hari Raya until the end of the MCO. However, educationists caution that B40 and rural students are not ready to resume PdPR but steps can be taken to ensure none of them get left behind.
Although there have been efforts by the Education Ministry to strengthen PdPR, including producing the “Teaching and Learning at Home Manual Version 2” (PdPR 2.0) and “Teaching and Learning at Home Timetable Implementation Guide” in February, B40 students, especially from rural schools, still face problems. ....

Making learning fun again

Marimuthu: ‘Going to school should be enjoyable instead of being burdened with exams.’
PETALING JAYA: Scrapping the centralised Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) exam is a positive move that will make learning fun again and lead to a more holistic development in children, say educationists.
Describing it as an “unnecessary” exam that has created a lot of stress for children, teachers and parents, Universiti Malaya Faculty of Education senior lecturer and teacher-trainer Dr Zuwati Hasim said UPSR was one of the daunting “high-stake exams” that primary pupils should not have to be burdened with.
“What is more important at primary level, ” she said, “is to develop interest in learning. ....
