DETROIT – Senior Alex Hughes will not only be walking into his high school a few more times this year, after graduating, he’s off to Harvard University his dream school with a perfect SAT score.

Macomb Township native takes to design for CMU show
Macomb Township native Lauren Bark is a student designer for Central Michigan University’s 2021 Threads Fashion Show. Bark is a 2019 Utica Academy of International Studies graduate.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP While applying to attend Central Michigan University and knowing she wanted to enter the world of fashion, Lauren Bark was drawn to the Threads Fashion Show.
Since last year’s show was canceled, the university’s 2021 production gives Bark her first chance to create a clothing collection at the college level.
Bark, a Macomb Township native, is a student designer for the show and graduated from the Utica Academy of International Studies in 2019. ....

14 Michigan Students Are National Merit Scholarship Winners

Fourteen Michigan students have been named winners for the 2021 corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship Program.
The winners were announced on Wednesday and include approximately 1,000 high-school seniors from across the U.S. According to a press release from the National Merit Scholarship Program, the corporate scholarships are financed by about 140 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations.
The awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study and students get a stipend that s anywhere between $1,000 - $10,000 each year. Some of the awards include a single payment between $2,500-$5,000.

More than 1.5 million students applied for the highly competitive scholarship and the program says that around 7,500 students will go on to win scholarships in 2021 that total $30 million. Winners of the $2,500 scholarships and the college-sponsored scholarships will be announced later this year. ....

No tax increase or layoffs in Utica schools' 2021-22 $194.2 m budget

School taxes will not go up in Utica during the 2021-22 school year under a $194.2 million budget passed unanimously by the school board at a special meeting Thursday evening.
“The board of education and the school district administration have not raised taxes for seven years in a row,” Superintendent Bruce Karam said. “We try to live within our means.”
The budget increases spending by 4 percent or about $7.5 million, an amount offset by an increase in foundation aid from the state, Karam said. It does not include any layoffs or major cuts, but does include a handful of new positions.
Board members praised the budget for holding the line on taxes and avoiding layoffs at a time when the pandemic has driven up many expenses. ....
