EDITORIAL: Robo-K-9s can defuse first contacts

ON APRIL 29, the New York City Police Department returned its leased robo-K-9, nicknamed âSpot,â to vendor Boston Dynamics not because it bit anyone (Spot has no teeth) or knocked a child down by too-vigorous tail-wagging (Spot has no tail either), but basically because it just creeped New Yorkers out.
But the Big Appleâs decision should not deter other law enforcement agencies from considering leasing and using robo-K-9s of their own.
Spot was âa casualty of politics, bad information, and cheap sound bites,â John Miller, NYPDâs deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, told the New York Times in announcing the termination of the dog robotâs $94,000 lease. ....

NYPD officer found dead in his home in apparent suicide

NYPD cop Rory Dahill was found dead at his Manhattan apartment Wednesday
Sources told DailyMail.com the 34-year-old was discovered on his bed with a gunshot wound to his head and his firearm beside him
Dahill, who joined the force in 2013, was found during a wellness check at his home after he failed to report to work at his stationhouse in Times Square

The New York Police Department is under fire after officers were spotted once again deploying a high-tech surveillance robot â this time during an arrest at a Manhattan public housing complex. On Monday, a bystander filmed as members of NYPD’s Technical Assistance Response Unit escorted a four-legged robot studded with sensors, lights and cameras out of a high-rise apartment. The robot, produced by Boston Dynamics, is as large as a medium-sized dog and can navigate autonomously. New York Congressmember Jamaal Bowman blasted the city’s use of police robots in a video posted on Twitter.
