Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury is introducing a new funding model to make it easier for applicants.
A restructure of funding rounds aims to make it easier for applicants seeking grants from the Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury.
The new method, to be introduced in the new financial year, will see two grant rounds annually for capital projects up to $20,000, two for capital projects over $20,000 and two for operational programme or event funding.
Trust board chairman Nathan Mills said in the past applicants selected a round to meet the level of funding they sought – up to $10,000 or over $10,000. ....

South Canterbury foodbanks benefit from community grants

In a move to help vulnerable households, the total funding distribution for foodbanks in the region by the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury in 2021 has come to $121,900.
The trust decided to broaden its support in an effort to combat food poverty in 2019 and set up an invitation-only funding round. Ongoing Covid fallout sees demand for Christmas food parcels soar

Hayes has custody of her two grandsons and her two nieces are also staying with her. They, along with her daughter, will have Christmas at her Shirley home.
Hayes is on a sickness benefit and said throughout lockdown it was easy to get support from Work and Income. However, this changed as restrictions eased.
“They were much harder to deal with once Covid was over and I sort of didn’t have many other options.”

Foodbank Canterbury struggling to cope with demand as Covid hits families hard

Last year, it distributed about 30 to 35 tonnes of food a month.
Now, nearly 100 tonnes of food that would have otherwise gone to landfill goes out to the community every month.

Foodbank Canterbury chief executive Dr John Milligan says the organisation is struggling to meet demand but has been repeatedly rejected for funding.
New Zealanders throw out about $870 million worth of food every year, or 122,547 tonnes (about 10,212 tonnes a month).
Before Covid-19, Foodbank Canterbury received individual pleas for food just four times a week – now it s more than 30 times a day.
One tradie and his wife were sharing a peanut butter sandwich for tea so their four kids could eat. Milligan says he burst into tears when the man told him he d never asked for help before, but needed it now. ....

Four simple and sustainable Christmas gift ideas

Part of Dole’s Promise is to provide one billion people with nutrition by 2025.
One of New Zealand s biggest fruit companies, Dole, is challenging New Zealanders to look at their gifting habits and approach Christmas a little differently this year. Prompted by urgent environmental and humanitarian issues, Dole has come up with a global company initiative, The Dole Promise, which sets goals around increasing access to sustainable nutrition, while at the same time decreasing fruit loss, packaging waste and carbon emissions.
Now they re encouraging New Zealanders to take inspiration from the movement by shopping and giving more sustainably this Christmas, and using our consumer dollars for good. So when you re writing your Christmas list this year, don t stop at family and friends – think about what you can give to the planet and your community. ....
