BOSTON Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston held its annual Spring Celebration fundraiser on May 20 with a virtual program dedicated to the fight against food insecurity, a crisis that worsened significantly during the coronavirus pandemic.

EcoGarden summer expansion on track for Fernie

The Community EcoGarden in Fernie will continue with expansion plans this summer after receiving confirmation of grants from the Columbia Basin Trust (Trust) and Canada Healthy Community Initiatives (CHCI).
“We’re looking forward and excited to be moving ahead with the project this summer – thank you for all of your support and to all the community volunteers that made this possible,” said Wildsight Elk Valley Branch Community Program Coordinator Dawn Deydey.
Deydey presented at Fernie’s Monday(May 25) council meeting, confirming a combined total of $122,000 from both organizations to expand the EcoGarden.
“The (Trust) through the Food Access and Recovery Grants has supported this project up to $34,000, and we were successful with $88,000 in funding from CHCI,” she said. ....

Food Access and Local Supply Initiative to connect small businesses

The Food Access and Local Supply Initiative will connect Boston-based small businesses with community-based organizations serving immigrant populations to provide the grocery items necessary to meet their emergency food distribution needs.
The grant can be used for providing grocery items to the list of identified CBOs, which will be shared with chosen businesses. Chosen businesses will be issued a $10,000 grant in advance to prepare their inventory for this program.
Chosen businesses will also be able to include delivery costs in their invoices where applicable and will receive a 10% administrative fee on each invoice to be used for operational costs, including rent, payroll, technology related to the management of grant requirements and overhead expenses. ....
