Covid crisis UK: Record 2.5million parcels were handed out by food bank charity during pandemic

A record 2.5 million emergency food parcels were handed out by Britain s biggest food bank charity during the first year of the pandemic.
The Trussell Trust said that its outlets had experienced a 33 per cent increase in the number of parcels they distributed between April 2020 and March 2021.
Almost one million (980,082) of these parcels went to children - more than one parcel every minute on average, according to the charity.
It is the first time the total number of parcels has topped two million as they warned that low-income families are experiencing historic levels of need.
The Trussell Trust said poverty was the main driver of food bank use, mainly caused by the low level of benefits, increasing numbers of families hit by the benefit cap policy, and gaps and in the social security system. ....

Thousands in Bolton received food parcels during pandemic

DOZENS of emergency food parcels were handed out to children in Bolton every week during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic.
A record 2.5 million parcels were distributed by the Trussel Trust s network of food banks across the UK in 2020-21.
The charity is urgently calling on UK governments to end the need for food banks once and for all amid soaring demand for help from families in crisis.
In Bolton, the charity handed out 3,698 emergency food parcels over the period. Of those, 1,821 went to children – equivalent to 35 every week.
The overall figure, which includes parcels with three or seven days worth of supplies, was a 16 per cent increase on the total number recorded the previous year. ....

Trussell Trust show food bank use increase in Wales

FOODBANKS across Wales provided more than 54,000 meals to children over the last year - one every ten minutes.
That is according to the latest Trussell Trust report, which reveals foodbanks in its network across Wales handed out 146,000 emergency food parcels to people facing crisis between April 2020 and March 2021.
These figures mark an eight per cent increase on the the previous year, when 135,000 parcels were handed out.
It is also a 69 per cent increase since 2015/16.
The Trust say these figures are just the tip of the iceberg, with a number of people being helped by other food aid providers and community groups that sprang up during the pandemic. ....

Nearly 1 million emergency food parcels have been given to children during the pandemic, figures show, sparking concern that poorer families are “shouldering the burden” of the economic crisis caused by Covid-19.
Ministers are being urged to “reset” the social security system as new data reveals the UK’s largest independent food bank provider saw a 33 per cent surge in demand over the past year, with more than 2.5 million emergency food parcels distributed overall – a record high.
