In a question-and-answer interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, author and Roosevelt biographer David Gessner shares his deep knowledge and insight into what he refers to as a kind of presidential "superpower."

President Joe Biden has opened the door on possibly reversing Donald Trump's slashing of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments in Utah. Some are pressing for a more permanent, legislative solution.

With the stroke of a pen, President Joe Biden could return Utah’s two largest national monuments to their original sizes. Instead, he opted to open a 60-day review into how his predecessor shrunk the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments by 2 million acres, leaving open a range of options for the new administration.
An executive order issued Wednesday instructs the Interior Secretary, a post likely to be filled by Rep. Deb Haaland of New Mexico, to submit findings and recommendations for moving forward on the future of these landscapes that have been ground zero in Utah’s public lands battles going back nearly a century. ....

Trump reduced the size of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by almost 50% and the size of Bears Ears National Monument by 85% in 2017 at the behest of Utah officials like former Sen. Orrin Hatch.
President Joe Biden signed an executive order Wednesday directing federal agencies to review a long list of changes former President Donald Trump made to environmental regulations and the management of public lands, as well as his reduction of national monuments.
“Everything from [the] spotted owl habitat, to drilling in the arctic, to the destruction at Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, all of that is going to be looked at here in short order,” said Aaron Weiss, deputy director of the Center for Western Priorities. ....
