Virtual program offered on building screech-owl boxes The Oak Ridger Join the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society for its First Thursday Nature Supper Club at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, as participants learn how to build a roost box for a screech-owl. Eastern screech-owls are the smallest owls that live in area woods. Like any animal, they need food, water and shelter. Since they are nocturnal, these owls look for a hollow tree or other safe place to hide and sleep year-round during the day. We will show you some of the important features needed to provide safe habitat when you build a roost box, according to a UT Arboretum Society news release. You provide your own stay-at-home supper, and we provide the nature as local naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales will entertain and teach us via Zoom. Birding for people with disabilities set for May 27 Oakridger Birding is an activity that can bring so much joy and empowerment to everybody, but not every body is able to go birding easily. Join this UT Arboretum Society and Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning virtual program on Thursday, May 27 to learn how those with disabilities can enjoy birding. Birdability Coordinator and Occupational Therapist, Freya McGregor (OTR/L, CIG) will explain how her organization focuses on removing barriers to access for birders with mobility challenges, blindness or low vision, intellectual or developmental disabilities (including autism), mental illness, being deaf or hard of hearing and other health concerns. ....
“Let’s Welcome the Snowbirds,” a Zoom presentation, will be an overview of species like dark-eyed junco, hermit thrush, yellow-bellied sapsucker, purple finch, winter wren and many more that overwinter in Tennessee.
