Byron Shire residents urged to get tested


Fragments of the COVID-19 virus have been found in the Byron Bay sewerage treatment plant (STP) that services Byron Bay, Broken Head, Suffolk Park, Wategos, and Sunrise areas and the Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWHD) are asking residents and visitors to get tested at the first sign of any symptoms.
‘At present, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 anywhere in the Northern NSW Local Health District,’ Paul Corben, Director North Coast Public Health Unit said.
‘Testing sewage can help provide early warning of undetected infections in an area. In this instance, where there are no known cases of COVID-19 this is of particular concern.’ ....

New South Wales is in a national emergency with 136 new coronavirus cases recorded on Friday – the highest number in one day amid the state’s latest outbreak – including 53 infectious in the community.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said there is “no doubt that the numbers are not going in the direction we were hoping” as she announced the situation in her state would now be regarded as a national emergency. ....

Of the 136 locally acquired cases reported to 8pm last night, 62 are from South Western Sydney Local Health District (LHD), 29 are from Western Sydney LHD, 28 are from Sydney LHD, 14 are from South Eastern Sydney LHD, two are from Northern Sydney LHD, one is from Nepean Blue Mountains LHD.
Due to the emergence of further cases of community transmission in Sydney’s west and south-west, people living the Cumberland and Blacktown Local Government Areas (LGAs) will only be allowed to leave their LGA if they are an authorised worker.
Surveillance testing every 72 hours applies to all authorised workers who live in the Fairfield LGA and, starting from midnight tonight, health and aged care workers who live in the Canterbury Bankstown LGA. ....

New South Wales Health has found COVID-19 fragments at the Byron Bay sewage treatment plant, which is within the Queensland-NSW border zone that was reinstated overnight.
The plant services about 19,000 people in Byron Bay, Wategos, Suffolk Park, Sunrise and Broken Head, with NSW Health officials saying the discovery is of “great concern”.
