Thawing frozen lakes create dangerous conditions for icy thrill-seekers

Warmer temperatures bring thinning ice throughout Ohio’s lakes, creeks and ponds, creating treacherous conditions for slick surface thrill-seekers heading outside.
Recreational vehicles like ATVs, snowmobiles and dirt bikes can make for a fun afternoon across icy surfaces, but with warmer temps can bring danger.
“We are warming up here, people should be cautious getting on the ice,” said Inspector Bill Holland with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
Portage Lakes permits recreational vehicles on the frozen lake, with restrictions.
In Stark County, Stark Park Chief Ranger Justin Laps says “ATVs, dirt bikes and other recreational vehicles are generally not permitted on property owned, controlled or leased by Stark Parks. This includes our frozen lakes.” ....

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A construction worker was struck by a vehicle Wednesday while directing traffic in Coventry Township, according to a press release from the Summit County Sheriffâs Office.
The 52-year-old construction worker from Euclid was standing in the westbound lane directing eastbound traffic past a construction vehicle near the 1000 block of Robinson Avenue.
A 62-year-old woman driving heading westbound didnât see the construction worker and struck him, according to the release. ....
