Debate continues on horse center's proposal for new home

The Blue River Horse Center has raised the $30,000 executive director John Longhill said is necessary to improve the fairgrounds to house the nonprofit’s horses and equine rehabilitation operation and educational programming at the old county fairgrounds. Still, as the county is set to consider whether or not to permit the organization to use the grounds this month, concerns have come in from members of the local community. ....

The Summit Foundation sets Jan. 31 deadline for student scholarships

The Summit Foundation’s annual student scholarship deadline is Jan. 31, according to a news release.
Each year, the foundation offers scholarships to local high school seniors to help fund future educational endeavors. A limited number of scholarships are also available for students who attend school in a neighboring community if the student or their parent works or lives in Summit County.
Last year, the foundation awarded over $300,000 to local students, according to the news release. High school seniors can apply online at SummitFoundation.org

In a difficult year, when so many people and organizations have sacrificed and given back to the community, The Summit Foundation had a different idea for its 2020 Philanthropy Awards. Rather than give out 10 or so awards to individuals and groups, why not give the award to the entire Summit County community after all it’s been through amid the pandemic? ....

The Summit Foundation distributes $1.8 million to support community

The Summit Foundation has distributed more than $1.8 million in grants and funds since October to support the local community, with more than $1.5 million given out this month.
That amount includes $796,000 in the foundation’s fall grants, $145,000 in the Summit County Cares Emergency Fund fall grants and $933,000 in donor-advised fall fund distributions.
Even with the fundraising, Jeanne Bistranin, the executive director of The Summit Foundation, said in a news release that “the need for assistance will continue to rise.”
The Summit Foundation also announced in the release an additional round of grants for its 2020 grantees, which will focus on workforce assistance, stabilization support for youth and families and nonprofit organizational support. ....

Demand for resources high as more than 600 locals apply for rent help

The most wonderful time of the year has turned into the most trying time of their lives for many people in Summit County as an increasing number are seeking out resources as the novel coronavirus pandemic rages on.
Local nonprofit organizations like the Family & Intercultural Resource Center are seeing that most acutely with demand for food and requests for financial help to pay the rent continuing to be high. Since Dec. 3 the nonprofit has seen 608 people requesting rental assistance via the organization’s online application, said Executive Director Brianne Snow on Friday, Dec. 18.
Snow said 77% of the people who have applied report working in the restaurant or food service industry, 89% of the applicants have lived or worked in Summit County for longer than a year and 50% of them have worked or lived in Summit County for five years or more. She added that the resource center has already paid out $375,000 in rental relief over the l ....
