Daily Monitor Wednesday December 30 2020 Summary Police Deputy IGP Paul Lokech says the Media Council has already availed a list of accredited journalists with valid badges that shall operate as a working tool for genuine journalists. Advertisement Police have announced that non-accredited journalists covering electoral activities will be barred. According to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Paul Lokech, the entity will effective December 31 enforce guidelines of the Uganda Media Council. “The accreditation process that has been open to all media practitioners expires December 31 as we had indicated in our communication of December 14,” Mr Lokech warned. He also used the Wednesday statement to assert that the move “will help security forces distinguish journalists who are compliant from those who are holding out.” ....

Ugandaâs government wants YouTube to abide by its laws Uganda wants YouTube to take down 14 Ugandan YouTube channels. Hereâs the gist, According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the channels were used to âmobilise riots that resulted in the loss of several lives and property in Ugandaâ. The riots broke out in Kampala on November 18, 2020, and spread to other parts of the country following the arrest of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi. The UCC also wants Google to ensure that all content broadcast to Uganda through YouTube s applications and services strictly complies with Uganda s Minimum Broadcasting Standards. ....

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) says these channels are used to mobilize riots that resulted in the loss of lives and property in Uganda last month. The channels also misrepresent information, views, facts, and events in a manner likely to mislead the public, UCC also claims. “[They contain] extremist or anarchic messages, including messages likely to incite violence against sections of the public on account of their tribes and political opinions … [and] may compromise national security and cause economic sabotage,” states UCC’s December 9 letter to Google. Bobi Wine however says the move by the government shows President Yoweri Museveni has “panicked” ....
