Area Wrestlers Represented in Predicament Rankings

A few KCII area wrestlers were represented in The Predicament’s latest Class 1A individual rankings before the holiday break.  Highland has a pair of grapplers recognized with sophomore Easton Schlabaugh ranked sixth at 106 lbs and senior Bryce Thompson eighth at 113 lbs. Schlabaugh is 5-2 at the break and most recently placed fifth at the Fort Madison Invitational. Thompson is 6-1 and claimed the top spot at the same tournament. Sigourney-Keota’s Jack Clarahan is also ranked sitting at eighth at 160 lbs. The sophomore is 20-3 on the year and placed third at the Regina Invitational on December 19th.  Both schools will start up the second half of the season on January 7th with Highland at Alburnett and Sigourney-Keota hosting a meet.

Thompson finishes first at Fort Madison Invitational

Posted Wednesday, December 23, 2020 12:27 pm Bryce Thompson finished on top of the podium at 113 pounds for Highland at the Fort Madison Invitational on Saturday. Thompson won each of his first two matches by tech fall, including a 15-0 decision over CCA freshman Jack Stevens, who had just one loss for the season.  Thompson earned a first-place finish with an 8-6 decision over Lane Scorpil, who finished sixth at 106 in the 2A state wrestling tournament for Columbus last season.  “Bryce went out and scored early in his finals match,” Highland coach Derick Ball said.  “He put up points all day long. He did a great job finishing his leg attacks and did a great job working from top position.”

Wildcats, Huskies, and Demons Compete at Fort Madison Invite

It was a day jam packed of wrestling in Fort Madison on Saturday with area schools Columbus Community, Highland, and Washington participating in the 16-team tournament. The Wildcats had the top area finish in ninth place with 72 points while Dubuque Hempstead won the team title with 249 points. Lane Scorpil was second on the podium at 113 lbs by going 2-1. He had a pair of pins in a combined 4:57 before falling in the title match 8-6. Chance Malone garnered third place at 285 lbs and Ty Scorpil was fourth at 106 lbs. Highland was right behind the Wildcats in 10th with 56 points. Bryce Thompson ended the day at the top of 113 lbs with a pair of technical falls and then defeating Scorpil in the title match by an 8-6 decision. Easton Schlabaugh was fifth at 106 lbs and Carlos Valenzuela was fifth at 126 lbs.

Huskies Win One at Cardinal

The Highland wrestling team had a busy Thursday, traveling to Cardinal for four different Southeast Iowa Superconference duels on the evening. Highland went 1-3 on the night, with their lone victory coming over the Comets on their home mat 48-24. Highland got wins in contested matches from Bryce Thompson at 120 by fall and Eli Slaymaker at 285 by fall. Pekin edged Highland in their duel 42-30. The Huskies got a win in a contested match from Bryce Thompson at 126 by fall. In a 48-24 loss to Mediapolis, Highland got contested match wins from Easton Schlabaugh at 113 and Carlos Valenzuela at 132. New London bested Highland 52-24 but the Huskies got a contested match win from Tristin Richardson at 138.

Huskies Wrestle at North Cedar Invite

The Highland wrestling team was on the mat Saturday for tournament action at the North Cedar Invitational. The Huskies finished eighth of 10 teams with their score of 54.5 points. Solon won the team title with 195 points. Highland was led by a pair of runner-up finishes from Easton Schlabaugh at 106 and Bryce Thompson at 120. Each went 2-1 on the day. Other finishes included Eli Slaymaker fourth at 285 and Jack Peiffer fifth at 126. The Huskies will next be in action Thursday when they travel to Cardinal for a Superconference event against Pekin, New London, Mediapolis and the Comets. Previous Story
