INVESTING SHOW: Where investors can profit in the dividend recovery


After slashing payouts as the Covid crisis hit, companies are now bringing back their dividends. 
Dividends from UK-listed firms jumped a 51.2 per cent to £25.7bn between March and June, according to the latest UK Dividend Monitor from Link Group.
This beat its expectations but the total payout remains a sixth below its pre-pandemic average levels.
Mining and banking accounted for two-thirds of the increase, according to the report, while the oil sector acted as a brake.
However, oil big guns Shell and BP are keen to lure investors back in with payouts and for those hunting income, the FTSE is making something of a return.  ....

UK dividend falls slow to pre-pandemic levels

Falls in UK dividends have slowed to pre-pandemic levels according to Link Group’s Dividend Monitor, suggesting the beginning of a bounce back.
The latest Dividend Monitor shows payouts were £12.7bn in the first quarter, reflecting a 26.7 per cent fall on a year-on-year basis.
However, this decline is the slowest in a year and half of companies indicated more positive sentiment by increasing, restarting or just holding their dividends steady.
As such, Link now expects underlying dividends to rise 5.6 per cent to £66.4bn for the year with headline dividends having the potential to surge 17.2 per cent to £74.9bn. ....

UK dividends fell at the slowest rate in a year during the first quarter, with the oil sector making up around half of the total cuts.
Payouts fell in Q1 by 26.7% to £12.7 billion on an underlying basis year-on-year. According to the latest data from Link’s Dividend Monitor, the decline was the slowest in a year, while half of companies increased, restarted, or held dividends steady.
Dividend cuts in Q1 totalled £5.8 billion, with around half coming from the oil sector. Other big reductions came from telecoms giant BT, Easyjet, and Associated British Foods (the owner of retailer Primark). ....
