With sparkling earrings and a silky polka-dot ensemble, Bianca Jagger, who I met on the occasion of London Gallery Week, struck me as possibly the only person who could spark envy from behind a face mask, protective shield, and medical gloves. But when I complimented her sartorial choice, she leaned in conspiratorially with an arched eyebrow and told me: “They’re just pyjamas from H&M!” ....
Remember when the demise of galleries in the West End and central London was widely predicted as they migrated East? It seems absurd now, as the greatest concentration of London’s galleries remains in Mayfair and Fitzrovia. And it is not just blue-chip galleries. Arcadia Missa, one of the most radical of London’s commercial art spaces, which currently has a solo show by the Canadian artist Rosa Aiello, moved “up west” from Peckham recently. But, of course, the mega-galleries are here, too, and their offerings, many of which opened in the weeks leading up to London Gallery Weekend, are among the best shows Rachel Whiteread at Gagosian and Ellen Gallagher at Hauser & Wirth are particular highlights. But here is a selection of shows which open for, or close to, London Gallery Weekend, from still-blooming veterans and mid-career artists in full flow to radical young guns. ....

Featured in Alex Da Corte’s Nostalgia for Pop For his first solo exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ, the artist riffs on the iconographies and hierarchies of a bygone era Across video, painting and immersive installations, Philadelphia-based artist Alex Da Corte plays with visual trickery and theoretical allusion to both savour and disrupt the shiny surfaces of popular culture. For his first solo exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ, ‘Helter Shelter or: The Red Show! Or …’, the artist derives part of his title from a 1955 Woody Woodpecker cartoon. The phrase, Da Corte informs us in the exhibition text, riffs on ‘Helter Skelter’, a ‘British word that means confusion or disorder’, which also happens to be the title of a 1968 Beatles song, a 1974 novel about the Manson Family murders, and the name of a children’s slide. Word play leads to a chain of associations that, rather than cohere, proliferate through addition and substitution: an animation, a ....
