The international human rights group was set up in 1961 by Peter Benenson, a London lawyer who was appalled to read about two Portuguese students jailed for seven years by their government.
Their crime? They had raised a glass and toasted liberty.
In October 2013, married couple Sunny Jacobs and Peter Pringle spoke to an audience at Ely Cathedral about their experiences of escaping Death Row. ....

Welwyn Garden City student takes part in Holocaust project

Jews contributed to every aspect of life in the town and held prominent roles such as business owners and money lenders, and were registered to vote, maintained organised sports teams, attended local schools and actively participated in raising funds for the Polish military.
The Great Synagogue was in the centre of the town, showing its importance. It gave the Jews a sense of connectedness, belonging and worth, giving them a chance to participate in town life.
Tragically, the Great Synagogue was torn down in 1939 and its destruction left a void in Polish and Jewish society. By liberation in 1945, less than 10 per cent of the Oświęcim Jewish population remained, and out of 8,000 only 77 returned home. This was just one town and we can see from these statistics just how much the Jewish community was decimated by the Holocaust. ....

Nicola Sturgeon says racists not welcome in Scotland after Glasgow Southside win

THE Glasgow count was the scene of one of the most high-profile contests of the election between the leaders of the SNP and Labour.
There was little surprise when Nicola Sturgeon comfortably saw off the challenge from Anas Sarwar in the Glasgow Southside constituency, winning a majority of nearly 9500.
It was a pattern that was repeated with SNP MSPs holding their seats in the three other Glasgow constituencies which were declared yesterday.
Instead, the main theme at the count, held in the city’s Emirates Arena, was defeating intolerance and bigotry.
One of the candidates standing against Sturgeon was independent candidate Jayda Fransen, who had confronted the SNP leader in a tense incident outside a polling station on Thursday. ....

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) Throughout its history, the City of Staunton has attracted many things, including shows like the circus.
The railroad that runs through the Queen City and being at the intersection of two major highways are mainly what made Staunton a popular stopping point, welcoming its fair share of interesting and talented people.
“Coming to Staunton was a logical stopping point, because we had a railroad and we had good facilities for hosting a circus,” Lucinda Cooke, with the Augusta County Historical Society, said. “People would come in from farms and other communities for the circus, even if it was only for one night.” ....
