Million-Year-Old Plant Fossils Are a Greenland Ice Sheet Warning

Jars of dirt taken from a Cold War-era military caper and lost in a freezer for decades could hold crucial new information about climate change and sea level rise. A study published on Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists says that plant fossils found in a sample of dirt collected from a mile beneath the ice in the mid-1960s suggest that the world’s pre-human climate was at one point warm enough to completely melt the Greenland ice sheet.

The dirt researchers inspected is a sediment sample from the bottom of an ice core, retrieved by drilling down into the ice sheet that covers the majority of Greenland. It’s pretty hard to actually reach all the way down to bedrock when taking samples due to the incredible pressure from the ice, explained Drew Christ, the study’s lead author and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Vermont. Andrew Christ

Drew Christ is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Gund Institute for Environment and Lecturer in the Department of Geology at University of Vermont. He received his PhD in Earth Science from Boston University where he studied the response of the Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets to climate changes over millions of years. He has embarked to Antarctica several times to conduct field-based geological mapping and sample collection.
In the latter portion of his PhD, Drew came to UVM to learn cosmogenic nuclide geochemistry methods with Professor Paul Bierman in the Community Cosmogenic Facility. He loved working at UVM and living in Vermont so much that he wanted to stay on as a Postdoc. ....

BURLINGTON, VERMONT In one of the Cold War’s oddest experiments, the United States dug a 300-meter-long military base called Camp Century into the ice of northwest Greenland in the early 1960s, powered it with a nuclear reactor, and set out to test the feasibility of shuttling nuclear missiles beneath the ice. A constant struggle against intruding snow doomed the base, which was abandoned in 1966. But Camp Century has left a lasting, entirely nonmilitary legacy: a 1.3-kilometer-long ice core drilled at the site. ....
