Sea level rise is killing trees along the Atlantic coast, creating 'ghost forests' that are visible from space

Trekking out to my research sites near North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, I slog through knee-deep water on a section of trail that is completely submerged. Permanent flooding has become commonplace on this low-lying peninsula, nestled behind North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The trees growing in the water are small and stunted. Many are dead.
Throughout coastal North Carolina, evidence of forest die-off is everywhere. Nearly every roadside ditch I pass while driving around the region is lined with dead or dying trees.
As an ecologist studying wetland response to sea level rise, I know this flooding is evidence that climate change is altering landscapes along the Atlantic coast. It’s emblematic of environmental changes that also threaten wildlife, ecosystems, and local farms and forestry businesses. ....

Mangroves from space: 30 years of satellite images are helping us understand how climate change threatens these valuable forests

Australia is home to around 2% of the world’s mangrove forests and is the fifth most mangrove-forested country on Earth. Mangroves play a crucial role in the ecosystem thanks to the dizzying array of plants, animals and birds they feed, house and protect.
Mangrove forests help protect coastal communities from cyclones and storms by absorbing the brunt of a storm’s energy. They help our fight against climate change by storing vast amounts of carbon that would otherwise be released as greenhouse gases.
In other words, mangroves are some of our most precious ecosystems. Despite their importance, there is much we don’t know about these complex wetland forests. For example, when does their growing season start? And, how long does it last? ....

Huntington Beach Police Remove Homeless Occupying Wetlands

Huntington Beach Police Remove Homeless Occupying Wetlands
Huntington Beachpolice say they cleared out homeless encampments in environmentally sensitive areas after finding the areas ridden with trash and drug paraphernalia.
There were “pollution, fires, litter, and drug use in that area, such as discarded needles, which had a significant environmental impact in an ecologically sensitive area,” Huntington Beach Lt. Brian Smith told The Epoch Times.
The group of homeless people, living at Harriet Wieder Park and Bolsa Chica Conservancy, were removed by the police’s homeless task force on March 10 during a clearing operation.
Homeless encampments in the wetland areas were polluting the land, burning unlawful fires, littering, and committing criminal activity such as drug use and possession of stolen property, according to a Facebook post made by the Huntington Beach Police Department ....

In a huge win for the environment, it appears that a massive warehouse that Amazon had planned to construct on protected wetlands near Toronto is not going to happen after all.
The development was one of many that Ontario Premier Doug Ford is quickly approving over the heads of municipalities and without usual due process through the use of Ministerial Zoning Orders (MZOs).
The highly controversial MZOs are used to fast-track new projects without the usual steps involved in such endeavours, like public consultation or even communicating with the municipality involved at all. ....
