After many years in dorm rooms and cinderblock “starter” apartments, I moved to Maui in 1974 and rented a spacious redwood house in Iao Valley.
Three bedrooms, two baths, a garage, $230 a month.
Those were the days.
The house sat on a small but scenic flag lot opposite Kepaniwai Park. Out the back door, a mile of mountain soared into the mists. The front porch overlooked a vine-laced cliff and the dancing drumbeat of Iao Stream. As a bonus, a border of rocky soil skirted the fence line.
“Dirt,” I thought. “I’ll put in a garden!” ....

You may not know that opera in Hawaii dates back to the 1850s when Queen Emma sang in the chorus of a Verdi production and King Kamehameha IV served as stage manager. The Hawaii Opera Theatre kicked off an island inspired digital production over Valentine s Day weekend. It s a Mozart one act comic opera entitled, Bastien and Bastienne. We talked with HOT s General Director Andrew Morgan, who also makes his directorial debut.

Many people know the story of how Diamond Head got its English-language name 19th-century British sailors initially mistook calcite crystals on its slopes for the precious stone. The Oahu volcanic crater’s original name, however, was Leahi, bestowed by Hawaiians who thought the crater’s shape resembled the dorsal fin of a tuna.
