Aldeburgh Yacht Club K6 Open

Nine K6 s participated in the first Open meeting of the year at Aldeburgh Yacht Club over the weekend of 8th & 9th May braving a forecast which all week had looked very problematic. The entrants included six boats from the now nine strong home fleet and three visitors whose effort to attend in these still restricted times was much appreciated.
True to the forecast, Saturday morning dawned cold, wet and windy and as the fleet gathered at 10am it was soon agreed to postpone racing until Sunday. But a late change to the forecast also made it clear that the weather would soon improve and importantly that the Saturday evening outside supper could go ahead. That evening 18 sailors and accompanying family sat down in groups of six to drinks, fish & chips, dessert and a delightful cheeseboard in half sunshine sheltered from the worst of the wind by the Clubhouse. Rowers to unite for 2,504 metre Anzac Day challenge

This Anzac Day rowers from Australia and New Zealand will unite on indoor rowing machines to honour the Anzacs in an initiative which was launched last year under strict COVID restrictions.

Rowing Australia CEO Ian Robson told Sky News rowers will be recording 2,504 metres because the number symbolises April 25.

He said there is a “profound” connection between rowers and the dawn landings at Gallipoli “where the method of transportation onto the beaches were rowing boats”.

“The bravest soldiers in those boats were the rowers because they had to sit upright with their backs to the bullets to get the soldiers out onto the beach.

“About 5,000 members of Australian rowing clubs back in 1914 enlisted and went to war and made the ultimate sacrifice and so many of those were likely to be at Gallipoli in those boats”.

Rowers are encouraged to log their metres online and contribute donations. ....
