No matter how advanced equipment gets, most still require a trained operator and many of these roles are filled by migrant workers. John Tan, managing director of TYE Engineering, an electrical works contractor, said his company has adopted new technologies in its daily work where possible, but it is impossible to scale back on manpower. ....
Shipping and commodities-focused law firm Helmsman has expanded its corporate capabilities after hiring Lynette Koh to lead its corporate and finance practice in Singapore from Mizuho Bank, where she headed the legal function. Koh is Helmsman s first director hire since Maureen Poh, joined the firm from Ince last year. Her practice focuses on finance needs and funding structures across industries, and she has experience in commodities and trade financing transactions. Established in April 2019, Helmsman currently has 18 lawyers, including four directors. It also has a presence in Hong Kong via the firm Tang & Co., which was established by Tang Chong Jun in 2018. ....
Singapore maritime arbitration aims to be go-to venue for shipping users in Asia Despite a Covid-challenged year, the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA) took on a heavier caseload last year, and is forging ahead to be the go-to destination for maritime and trade users based in Asia. It was a year when hearings went digital and new linkages were forged, said the chairman of SCMA, Justice Chao Hick Tin. “With Singapore growing into a leading maritime and arbitration centre, its key users have also grown across the region. SCMA’s new vision – to become the leading maritime arbitration centre in Asia – reflects this new reality,” added Justice Chao in SCMA’s 2020 Annual Review released last week. ....
