Taxi associations playing their part to stimulate economic rebound
With their livelihoods largely dependent on the increased return of tourists to the island, one of the country’s more vocal taxi associations is playing its part to protect the nation from the spread of Covid-19 and improve the chances of further economic stimulation.
The United Taxi Association – which operates primarily from the VC Bird International Airport – was one of three such associations that gave a commitment to the government that they would encourage their members to get vaccinated, as they await the rebound of the tourism sector.
Speaking to Observer yesterday, United President, Ian Joseph, disclosed that the majority of his members have already been vaccinated, even some who are not actively working at this time. ....

Taxi operators to finally get long-awaited rate adjustment
After requesting an adjustment to the fare structure for several years, taxi operators across the island will finally see the much-anticipated changes come into effect on Saturday, May 15.
That announcement was made by the government yesterday, following discussions with representatives from the taxi associations in Cabinet on Wednesday.
The taxi operators have been voicing their displeasure with the lack of response to their request from the government, particularly during the past year, when their livelihoods were severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
They were also displeased with what they deemed unfair attempts from certain factions to paint the request as unfair, repeatedly clarifying that they were not asking for an increase in the fares, but rather a change to the structure under which the fares are applied. ....

The United Taxi Company – based at the VC Bird International Airport – is calling for urgent adjustments to the fare structure for drivers, ahead of any potential return to normalcy.
According to President of the company Ian Joseph, there have been attempts to paint the picture that what the drivers are looking for is an increase to fares – however, he says that is inaccurate and assured that they are only looking to address an outdated agreement.
Joseph argued further that they are not being engaged when decisions are being made at a high level, only to be told what the changes are after the fact. Joseph further lamented the impact the outdated agreement was having on the finances of the drivers and warned that there are some changes they are simply not prepared to make once things return to normal. ....

St. Bonaventure University’s mock trial team has achieved a string of successes to begin the new year. The team finished in fourth place at the Bonaventure-hosted Friar Faceoff Tournament on Jan. 30-31 and took fifth place at AMTA Regional Tournament 1-D on Feb. 5-7 – earning a bid to the Opening Round Championship Series Tournament in the process.
Leah Gale, a sophomore criminology major and director of this year’s Friar Faceoff, described how the team dealt with the new challenges that came from holding entirely-online Mock Trial tournaments. ....
