A NATURE reserve near Hereford is having to battle fires, out-of-control dogs, fly-tipping and vehicles being driven across the land, bosses say. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust said wildlife has been surviving at Lugg Meadows, just outside the city on the Ledbury Road, despite the problems it is facing. Bosses said the meadows are one of the few remaining places to see the rare snake’s head fritillaries flower in the wild and are also, just, home to breeding curlew – a bird now on the red list of conservation concern. Day-trippers littered Lugg Meadows with disposable barbecues in 2020 But those who manage a proportion of the historic Lammas meadows, are more often contacted about anti-social behaviour at the nature reserve than about wildlife sightings. ....

Mark Martindale, 36, of Swaffham Road, Wendling, admitted arson on August 26 last year, when he set fire to rubbish behind a store at the shopping centre. Norwich Crown Court heard that Martindale had 29 previous matters for arson all of a similar nature with many being started after Martindale had been drinking alcohol. Martindale was due for sentence at Norwich Crown Court on Friday, but Judge Andrew Shaw adjourned the case so he could look at a range of measures to be put in place to ensure a close eye is kept on Martindale at all times to prevent further offending. ....

After a leak was detected at an old phosphate plant s wastewater pond, 316 homes were evacuated because officials feared the toxic mess could burst through a containment wall. The Tampa Bay Times reports that, to keep the wastewater from breaking containment and risking lives, pumps were deployed to hurriedly siphon off the liquid and send it into the bay. At least 165 million gallons of HRK Holdings waste have so far ended up there. ....
