Hong Kong s domestic workers say the government is unfairly forcing them to take a Covid-19 vaccine or else face the risk of undergoing repeated mandatory testing after authorities suddenly ordered them to be screened again.
Although Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet Ngor revealed on Tuesday (May 11) she was dropping her plan to require that the city s roughly 370,000 helpers be inoculated, she said they must be tested for a second time by the end of the month, despite a first round uncovering just three coronavirus cases. ....

Hong Kong’s government has sparked discrimination concerns over plans to force hundreds of thousands of foreign domestic workers to be vaccinated against Covid-19 or face losing their job.
Authorities have embarked on mass mandatory testing of the city’s 370,000 domestic workers after a more infectious strain was detected in the community, and flagged plans for compulsory vaccinations.
Under the measures, workers would need to be vaccinated before their contracts could be renewed, and any incoming worker would be required to have the vaccination to enter Hong Kong. ....

The Hong Kong Employers of Overseas Domestic Helpers Association says the government s two-week ban on arrivals from the Philippines has come as a relief to many people who are concerned about the Covid-19 situation in the country.
The discovery of a mutant strain of the virus in the community in Hong Kong has led to the SAR government banning flights from the Philippines, India and Pakistan. The government says multiple arrivals from the three countries have also had the same mutated form of the virus. ....

Domestic helpers in Hong Kong are reluctant to receive Covid-19 jabs because of worries about possible side-effects and the efficacy of vaccines, according to concern groups and an employers association.
The lukewarm response comes as authorities expanded the city s vaccination campaign by including the 370,000-strong helper community among the priority groups in the free inoculation programme this week.
Eman Villanueva, a spokesman for the Asian Migrants Coordinating Body, said on Tuesday that the hesitation on whether to get the shots was widespread among helpers. ....
