Board of Supervisors Approves New Emergency Shelter For Houseless Residents in I.V.

July 22, 2021 at 4:36 pm by Asumi Shuda
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved a new emergency, 50-bed shelter for houseless individuals in Isla Vista — currently titled the El Colegio project — during their June 15 meeting.
The shelter’s date of operation is not confirmed, and it will potentially be named the “Hedges House of Hope” in honor of Father Jon-Stephen Hedges, a community organizer, spiritual leader and social justice advocate known for his work with the houseless community in Isla Vista.
This project will be handled and run by Good Samaritan Shelter — an agency that works to provide temporary, emergency and/or transitional housing and support services for houseless residents. Houseless residents will be directly referred to the shelter through a coordinated entry system operated by service providers from Good Samaritan, and the shelter will not take any drop-in or walk-up services.  ....

COVID-19 relief funding offers local cities a chance to get creative in addressing homelessness

A Motel 6 that was turned into emergency homeless shelter space and supportive housing in Paso Robles is one of several fast-paced and unconventional efforts to address homelessness on the Central Coast amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But it s one of the few that will remain when the pandemic is over.
While the coronavirus and resulting economic downturn have led to concerns about a spike in homelessness, it also generated a surge in federal and state dollars aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 among houseless populations.
Much of the funding is one-time and many of the resulting projects are temporary, but homeless advocates say coronavirus relief funding has offered opportunities to experiment with ideas that wouldn t otherwise be attainable. ....

Many Isla Vistans showed up on Election Day to cast their ballots at the two local polling stations: Isla Vista Community Center and Santa Catalina Hall. Election night concluded in Santa Barbara with Joe Biden taking the county by a significant lead in the presidential race, according to official tallies.
Daily Nexus photographers documented scenes at polling places in I.V. throughout the day.
Given that university housing has been mostly evacuated since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of polling locations near the campus was greatly reduced. One of the polling sites was located at the Linda Vista Room of Santa Catalina Residence Hall. (Sicheng Wang / Daily Nexus) ....
