1. What first brought you to Japan? I first arrived in Tokyo in 2004, when I was sent over from Paris by the company I was working for, in the banking industry. After 10 years dealing with financial markets, I decided to start an adventure in entrepreneurship by opening Citron in Aoyama.
2. When did you learn to cook? Did anyone teach you? My mom’s home cooking was my inspiration. She used to bake quiches every Sunday for lunch, and she’s a remarkable gourmet. All our recipes are based on her traditional French home cooking, we just turned them into fun vegetarian dishes. My mother actually came to Tokyo before the grand opening to train the kitchen staff, making sure the recipes were perfect.

The red cedar bench tells 10 years’ worth of stories. The utilitarian seat was among the first pieces created by Ishinomaki Laboratory, a DIY furniture project founded by architect Keiji Ashizawa to empower locals in disaster-hit northeast Japan in the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami.
For much of the past decade, through sunshine and snow, the bench its solid simplicity and functional lines designed by Taiji Fujimori has sat outside Ishinomaki Laboratory’s workshop in Miyagi Prefecture, providing a welcome resting place for staff.
And now, the bench, organically grained and dark gray from the passing of time, is one of countless items on display at a new Tokyo exhibition celebrating a decade of Ishinomaki Laboratory, charting the project’s dynamic evolution from a local public workshop to a respected global design brand, one still firmly rooted in the goal of social impact.

This month, “On: Design” features new products inspired by traditional bamboo and wood crafts coming from Kyoto, Sabae in Fukui Prefecture and Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture.

It’s good that design firm Nendo is so prolific, but it’s also made it hard for shoppers to keep up. In March, however, the studio launched its own online store, Nendo House, making it easy for fans to directly purchase a wide selection of past and new products, including a few online-exclusive ones.
