Ruth Maguire MSP announced she had stage three cervical cancer SNP MSP Ruth Maguire has revealed she has been diagnosed with stage three cervical cancer. Maguire, who represents the Cunninghame South constituency in Holyrood, said she will be taking a medical leave of absence from public duties and frontline parliamentary work for treatment and recovery with immediate effect. The politician said that although her condition is serious, doctors believe it is treatable. In a statement, she said: “On Tuesday 27th April 2021 I received the difficult news that I had been diagnosed with stage three cervical cancer. “Having now had time to process what this means for me and talk things over with my family, I feel it is only right that I share this information with my constituents. ....
Councillor Louise McPhater has been selected to contest the Cunninghame South seat for Scottish Labour at this year’s Scottish Parliament elections. Ms McPhater who was first elected to the council in August 2016 after beating Robin Sturgeon – the father of the First Minister – in a by-election in Irvine West will aim to win back the Cunninghame South seat which has been held by the SNP since 2011. Ruth Maguire is the current MSP for the area and won the seat in 2016 with more than 50 per cent of the vote. Last year Cllr. McPhater stood as the Labour candidate for the Central Ayrshire constituency in the general election but came a distant third behind the SNP’s Dr Philippa Whitford and the Conservatives. ....
The vulnerable victim of a controlling boyfriend who stood in the last council election has told of her trauma after her abusive ex was thrown in jail. Andrew Craig, 43 was sent to prison for 27 weeks after admitting abusive and aggressive behaviour towards a woman and brandishing a knife at a teenager while holding his head over a sink. Craig, of Woodgrove, Dreghorn , stood in the Irvine West ward for the Scottish Green party in the 2017 North Ayrshire Council election. His former partner, who suffers physical health difficulties and now PTSD through the behaviour, said she felt he should have been caged for longer for his campaign of abuse. ....
