Irvine Residents Call on City Council to Address 'Public Health Crisis'

Irvine Residents Call on City Council to Address ‘Public Health Crisis’
IRVINE, Calif. A group of Irvine residents gathered outside city hall on May 25 to protest a variety of issues, including some related to an asphalt-mixing plant.
Various activist groups attended the rally, which was formed by the Stop Toxic Asphalt Pollutants (STAP) group, an Irvine-based organization seeking relief from the smell of burnt rubber. Members of the group said they’re worried about the health effects of air pollution from All American Asphalt, which is located close to Irvine neighborhoods including Orchard Hills.
Kim Konte, who is helping to lead the charge against the pollutants, said she’s tired of being ignored by the Irvine City Council about an issue that is affecting multiple neighborhoods and causing health issues. ....

U.S. Marine Corps jets and helicopters could return to the decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station El Toro following an agreement inked by the Irvine City Council on Tuesday.
The Flying Leathernecks Historical Foundation has proposed refurbishing a 215,000-square-foot hangar at Orange County Great Park into a new home for its aviation museum currently on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. In March, Marine officials permanently shuttered the museum after reallocating more than $460,000 annually spent on its operation toward higher-priority missions. ....

After facing pressure from north Irvine residents and a group of UC Irvine advisors, the city has hired a contractor to investigate whether an asphalt factory is spewing out toxic fumes.
For months, residents have been contacting the city and regional air regulators to force All American Asphalt to cease production and relocate. They say they have felt like their voices are falling on deaf ears.
The community group, Non-Toxic Neighborhoods, has been leading the effort through organizing residents, stationing lawn signs throughout the city and partnering with UC Irvine professors. More than 2,100 people have signed an online petition. ....

Child Marriage Victims Call for Ban in California

Child Marriage Victims Call for Ban in California
When Sara Tasneem was 15 years old, she met the 28-year-old man she would marry. They met over a glass of orange juice and were married by nightfall.
The marriage was arranged by Tasneem’s father, when he learned she had a boyfriend and feared she might engage in premarital sex.
“I was really scared of my dad,” Tasneem told The Epoch Times. “I grew up in a household where he was extremely abusive towards me. So I never questioned him. I also didn’t really realize what he was talking about.”
Tasneem is now 40 and she is one of several former child-brides who are now rallying behind legislation to ban child marriages in California. ....
