“Portage la Prairie did a superb job hosting the first Canad Inns Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials four years ago, so it was an easy decision to bring the event back to Stride Place,” said Amy Nixon, Chair of Curling Canada’s Board of Governors. “Portage la Prairie has proven repeatedly that it can put on top-calibre curling championships, and I’m positive the city will show its support for these Olympic hopefuls.” ....

Canada's top mixed doubles curling teams to compete in Manitoba for Beijing Olympics

Canada’s top mixed doubles curling teams are heading back to Portage la Prairie.
On Tuesday, Curling Canada announced The Canad Inns Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials are returning to Manitoba in late December.
Sixteen teams will compete to represent Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
The first mixed doubles curling trial was held in Portage la Prairie in 2018. The team of Winnipeg’s Kaitlyn Lawes and partner John Morris won the inaugural event and went on to capture the first-ever gold medal in mixed doubles curling at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Six teams have already qualified for the Olympic trials including Gimli’s Kerri Einarson and teammate Brad Gushue. They took home gold at the 2021 Home Hardware Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in March. Selkirk’s Kadriana Sahaidak and Colton Lott, who finished second at the event, have also qualified for the trials. ....

Shelter moving to Saskatchewan

The Portage Community Shelter received a conditional use application that allows for the emergency residential shelter to operate in what is classified as a C2 central commercial zone after the city council heard from both the Portage Community Revitalization Corporation and local businesses against the new location on Saskatchewan Avenue and approved the use earlier this month.
Shelter coordinator, Caileigh Morrison, brought the presentation to Portage city council and explained why 236-238 Saskatchewan Avenue E  was the perfect spot for the new location.
