Countdown to the Steele County Fair
Less than 170 days until the Steele County Free Fair. Hopefully. Plans are progressing for a regular version of the fair. Realistically, some things might be different in 2021. But fair manager Scott Kozelka must move forward with plans for a normal fair until he s told otherwise. He was a guest on a Fair Talk edition of the AM 1390 KRFO Talk of the Town program recently.
Kozelka said, We re getting excited. Lots of plans are being made.We re planning as normal until we re told something different. Everyday sounds a little bit better. People are wearing their mask. People are considerate.vaccines.All that helps our fair, helps our county, our community, our state, everywhere.
Owatonna High School held a National Signing Day celebration to recognize 18 student-athletes that have committed to play sports while attending college. It is a cross-section of sports, educational interests and levels of college. Signings represent NCAA Divisions I, II and III, plus NAIA Division II and National Junior College level.
Wednesday was a day for smiles and congratulatory messages. The work of balancing college life, college courses and college athletics will come later. Several other OHS student-athletes are expected to join their classmates but hadn t made a final decision yet.
Several students I spoke with said picking a college or university for their desired field of study was first priority. Some reached out to coaches at their schools of interest. In some cases coaches reached out to them through a variety of ways. Some students may have had a campus visit, but not all, due to the pandemic.
A popular event for both music and great food has been canceled for 2021 due to on-going concerns for safety from COVID-19. Smokin In Steele, a BBQ and Blues Festival held at the Steele County Fairgrounds normally in June, announced last night that it was canceling the event this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic battle.
The post to social media, and later emailed to us, is from John Hammer, who oversees the event. You can read the full announcement from Hammer below. After heart wrenching deliberation, it is with great sadness we notify you that due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic battle, Smokin in Steele, produced by The Knights of Columbus Council 945 in Owatonna, MN, must postpone SIS 2021 until June 3-4, 2022. Given the current situation, we could not find a way to present Smokin in Steele 2021, in its entirety, that would ensure the safety of the public, our sponsors, volunteers, and participants. We firmly believe in our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternit
