Commodore Malcolm Williams was a veteran mariner who served in the Falklands War A Royal Navy commodore who served in the Falklands War and was appointed CBE for leading disaster relief responses in Sierra Leone and Kosovo, has been killed in a tragic three-vehicle crash. Commodore Malcolm Williams, 69, was involved in the collision between two cars and a lorry while he was driving on the A3 road in Hampshire on April 20. He was declared dead at the scene of the accident, at Junction 3 of the A3 near Waterlooville, Hampshire.  Commodore Williams was a veteran mariner who had served as the Operations Officer on HMS Ambuscade, a frigate which was on the frontline of the 1982 Falklands conflict.

Tributes to former Royal Navy officer killed in crash with lorry The family of a man who died following a crash between two cars and a lorry on a Hampshire road have today paid tribute to him. Police were called to the incident at junction 3 of the A3(m) near Waterlooville at 11.40am last Tuesday. The driver of one of the cars, Malcolm Williams, 69, of Gains Road, Southsea, was pronounced dead at the scene. Paying tribute to the retired Royal Navy officer and former Chief Executive of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society in Chichester, his family said: Commodore Malcolm Williams CBE RN was a man of principle, fortitude and compassion and a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Cdre Williams served as operations officer on the Type 21 frigate HMS Ambuscade during the Falklands conflict. He also served as navigator aboard aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and commanded both HMS Andromeda and HMS Scylla. He was commanding officer on HMS Fearless while she was deployed in the Far East for the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. Following his naval retirement he took up the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society role, focusing on the welfare of merchant seafarers and fishermen. Cdre Williams led a campaign to stop cheques being abolished by banks, and called for acknowledgement of merchant seafarers during Remembrance services. Cdre Williams was also admitted to the fraternity of the Younger Brethren of Trinity House, an organisation concerned with the safety of seafarers.
