Published: 2:00 PM January 22, 2021    The webinar takes place on Monday, January 25, and is supported by leading rural insurer NFU Mutual - Credit: Alan Reid The emotional and practical challenges of handing a family farm down to the younger generation will be discussed by leading national experts in an online event hosted by the Devon Federation of Young Farmers Clubs (YFC).  The webinar on Monday, January 25, is supported by leading rural insurer NFU Mutual and will focus on the need for effective succession planning within family farming businesses.  Professor of Rural Resource Management, Matt Lobley of the University of Exeter, will be drawing upon his findings of 30 years of research with farming families across the UK. “Retirement and farm succession is often more complex than it sounds and, for most, it’s a very emotional process,” said professor Lobley.

Young adults living in rural areas were hit hard by social isolation during the pandemic YOUNG ADULTS living in rural Scotland have been hit hardest by loneliness during the pandemic according to a RuralCovidLife survey by Edinburgh University. More than 3000 people in rural communities across Scotland were polled in October and November 2020 to investigate the psychological, social and financial effects of the Covid-19 restrictions on people living in rural areas. When asked how lonely they were feeling, 32% of those aged 18 to 29 years old said they felt lonely most or all of the time. This compared with 3% in the 70 to 79 age group, and 8% of the total surveyed.

About 800 people watched two performances from their cars at Melton Mowbray market in Leicestershire last weekend. Organiser Emma Lovegrove, from the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, said the nativity was a bit of a crazy idea she had to round off what has been a difficult year for farmers. Mental health issues are on the rise during this coronavirus [pandemic] and mental health issues amongst the rural community are high as well, so obviously this is a real concern for us and we hope to be able to give a little something to them, a bit of festive cheer through this nativity, she said.

But after such a difficult year, the Wheelock Street store has decided to give £400 to every charity that applied. This year, the company, part of the Tesco family has donated more than £27,000 to 68 community groups. One Life Art will use their donation to buy new materials Cheshire Young Farmers Clubs, Cledford Primary School PTFA, Holmes Chapel Hurricanes Under 14 Blacks, Middlewich Primary School, Middlewich Town U10’s FC and One Life Art are the six latest recipients.
