AUSTIN State leaders will reallocate $250 million of already-budgeted money for a down payment on barrier fencing to built along the Texas-Mexico border now that the Biden administration is not pursuing the wall promised by former President Trump.
The announcement was made by Gov. Greg Abbott during a news conference in the Capitol where he was joined by more than two dozen Republican lawmakers and the leaders of the state House and Senate.
The governor, who plans to seek a third term next year, said South Texas farm and ranch owners are being overwhelmed by a tidal wave of illegal immigrants coming across the border that the federal government has failed to bring under control.
