South Texas political leaders and activists decried President Donald Trump s trip to the region on Tuesday, saying the appearance to tout his border wall was intended to play to his white nationalist base. Trump made an afternoon speech in the Rio Grande Valley to talk up the wall, which he claimed had slowed illegal border crossings and crime. The appearance marked his first speech since armed supporters of the president staged a coup attempt in the U.S. Capitol that left five people dead.

Both entities own land along the border that stands to be affected by the wall. They now join the Webb County Commissioners Court, Zapata County Commissioners Court, Eagle Pass City Council and Texas Democratic Party in this initiative to stop the wall from coming to this stretch of the border before construction begins.
