McDONOUGH COUNTY Over the last two weeks, McDonough Telephone Cooperative awarded four $500 scholarships to graduating seniors in surrounding communities who would have interviewed for the Youth To Washington trip.
Each year, the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives hosts Youth Day, bringing together more than 300 students in Springfield from across the state representing their local electric and telephone cooperatives. Rachel Kerns, Director of Marketing and PR for McDonough Telephone stated, “Youth Day is one of the Cooperative’s biggest youth events, recognizing exceptional local students.” The annual event brings leadership lessons, tours of historical sites, and a visit to the State Capitol to meet with senators and representatives. PITTSFIELD Construction of a wind energy project that will produce enough electricity to power almost 20,000 houses will move forward near Pittsfield.
Boise, Idaho-based Illinois Winds LLC said an agreement has been reached with Prairie Power for the purchase of all of the power generated by the Panther Creek wind project for 20 years. It also has inked an agreement to connect to the distribution system.
Prairie Power is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative headquartered in Springfield. Through its 10 electric distribution cooperatives, it provides power to about 78,000 members in central Illinois. It buys wind-generated energy through several companies and also has developed two 500-kilowatt communi ....

The Benton Institute for Broadband & Society has released a policy report that breaks down why open-access, middle-mile networks can help close the digital divide in multiple geographic contexts.

A new report from the Benton Institute for Broadband & Society argues for more federal support of open-access, middle-mile (OAMM) networks, which “can help the nation meet its deployment and competition challenges.”
By definition, an OAMM network will allow any Internet service provider (ISP) to connect to it, “on nondiscriminatory terms and conditions,” in order to provide last-mile solutions to homes and businesses. Economically, the idea is to encourage fair competition and reduce costs for companies so that credible business plans can be made for connecting unserved areas. ....
