When the Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra was booked to perform as part of the Illinois College Fine Arts Series, the idea was to give the audience a taste of the late Big Band leader’s music.

Chris Vallillo is a singer-songwriter, roots musician and historian whose contributions to music history in the rural Midwest arguably have made him a notable part of the narrative he seeks to document.
On Wednesday, he’ll bring a bit of Illinois’ musical past to life as part of the Illinois College Fine Arts Series.
First, a bit of Vallillo’s history.
In 1987, Vallillo took on the Schuyler Arts Folk Music Project to document the last musicians of the pre-radio generation, covering from around 1880 to around 1940. His recordings for that project now are in the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Collection. ....

A five-part video series exploring the inner workings of the organ at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, North Carolina, was the inspiration for Illinois College graduate Homer Ferguson’s virtual performance Friday as part of the Illinois College Fine Arts Series.
“When I was invited last spring to come be part of the series, part of it was just a return to campus,” Ferguson said. “Part of it was to be with my mentors, (Rudolph) Zuiderveld and Garrett Allman.” ....

Storyteller Bobby Norfolk of St. Louis will add his voice to the instruments making up Saturday’s children’s concert by the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.Provided
Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra’s annual tradition of performing a kids’ concert as a way of encouraging future generations of music lovers will move online this weekend with help from storyteller Bobby Norfolk’s instrument of choice his voice.
While the original plan for the children’s concert was for the St. Louis-based Norfolk to narrate Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” a popular musical tale that showcases individual instruments by linking them to the story’s characters, it didn’t take long into the pandemic for the symphony to realize a live performance probably wasn’t going to work. ....
