Redbridge equality group condemns Ilford mosque egg attack

Redbridge Equalities and Community Council has put out a statement condemning the May 4 attack on worshippers outside the Ilford Islamic Centre where they were hit with eggs and stones.

Redbridge Equalities and Community Council (RECC) has condemned an attack outside an Ilford mosque where worshippers were hit with eggs and stones.
The group, which has been promoting equality and challenging discrimination for more than 50 years, said it was with mounting horror that it learned of the attack which happened outside the Ilford Islamic Centre at around 11pm on Tuesday, May 4.
In the statement RECC said: It was with mounting horror that the RECC learnt that worshippers at the Ilford Islamic centre were pelted with stones and eggs following prayers on May 4. ....

Ilford mosque attack highlights 'wider Islamophobia issues'

Ahmad said he was disappointed something like this could happen after the brutal year everyone has had.
He said: With everyone having suffered through Covid and knowing life is so fragile, it doesn t change anything for some people. Bigots still exist and they don t see anything different.
He said the outpouring from the community at large has been very positive, with the police and council very supportive and quick to respond.
Council leader Jas Athwal visited the mosque multiple times on Wednesday and spoke to the congregation during evening prayers to try to ease their concerns.

Police have launched an investigation into a suspected Islamophobic hate crime after Muslims worshipping at their mosque s prayer service reported being assaulted with eggs and stones.
According to a report from The Evening Standard, burly white men targeted the Ilford Islamic Centre on Tuesday during a late-night prayer service in South Ilford, London.
The Federation of Redbridge Muslim Organisations, or FORMO for short, alleged in a Twitter statement that members of the Ilford mosque were pelted with eggs and some other items, with at least five congregants hit. They condemned the act as a cowardly premeditated Islamophobic attack. ....

Worshippers were pelted with eggs outside an east London mosque in a truly appalling attack, police said.
Five people were hit with eggs outside the Ilford Islamic Centre in Albert Road, Ilford, around 23:00 BST on Tuesday.
MP for Ilford South Sam Tarry tweeted he was shocked and saddened by the Islamophobic attack .
The attack comes as worshippers mark Ramadan. Police are investigating the incident, the Met said.
Mr Tarry said: These disgraceful acts of violence and hatred have no place in Ilford, and I hope that the perpetrators face justice as soon as possible. ....

He said he was particularly concerned the incident has unnerved those people walking home late from the mosque after evening prayers.
Redbridge Council leader Jas Athwal posted on Twitter to say he was saddened and disgusted about the attack.
He said he has spoken to the police and had received assurances that they were taking the incident extremely seriously.
Cllr Athwal added: The council will continue to work closely with the police and uniformed patrols in the areas surrounding the mosque will be increased.
