21% of Suburban and Rural Americans Are Considering Moving That is as of November, according to a regular monthly survey conducted by Bank of America. In comparison, just 11% of urban residents plan to leave their current city. Since Bank of America began their survey over the summer, suburban and rural Americans have become much more interested in moving, with the share considering a move rising to 49% by November from 29% in June. By contrast, urban residents have been much less likely to want to leave their homes, with about two-thirds saying they want to stay where they are. Early on in the pandemic, there was a concern that many people would leave cities for the hinterlands to escape the risk of disease and to take advantage of new remote working opportunities. The Bank of America survey, however, suggests that “the ‘urban exodus’ thesis is little more than ‘urban legend,’” as they put it, especially now that vaccinations are beginning. ....
