NHRC directs Centre, states to ensure no one should be deprived of PMGKAY over biometric issue

New Delhi [India], May 19 (ANI): The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday directed the Centre, states, and union territories (UTs) to ensure no beneficiary of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojna (PMGKAY) should be deprived of the right to food due to biometric authentication problems during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The direction came against a complaint filed by Suhas Chakma, Director, Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG).
There are a total of 30.08 crore beneficiaries under PMGKAY scheme.
The computerisation of Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS), no doubt, is aimed at ensuring food security to the people, especially to the poor and vulnerable sections by eliminating the shortcomings such as leakages and diversion of foodgrains, inclusion and exclusion errors in identification of beneficiaries, etc. But the lack of availability of inte ....

High drawal rate
During the three years, the quantity of food grains drawn by States (annually) hovered around 60 million tonnes to 66 million tonnes. Compared to the allocation, the rate of drawal was 91% to 95%. As the National Food Security Act (NFSA), which came into force in July 2013, enhanced entitlements (covering two-thirds of the country’s population), this naturally pushed up the States’ drawal. Based on an improved version of the targeted Public Distribution System (PDS), the law requires the authorities to provide to each beneficiary 5 kg of rice or wheat per month. ....

New Delhi: The International Women’s Day 2021 comes on the back of one of the worst health and humanitarian crisis that humanity has seen in close to a century. The pandemic unleashed disruption in social and economic lives, especially for the marginalised and at-risk groups. Of the 690 million people who are food insecure in the world right now, 60 per cent are women and girls. According to the World Food Programme, because of the pandemic, hunger levels are expected to double and the heaviest burden will fall on women and girls. In countries facing conflict, famine and hunger, women often eat last and least. It is important to focus on the disproportionate impact that rising hunger levels are expected to have on women. But what is equally important is to highlight that women are also the solution, and giving them access to food, tools and resources can make all the difference. ....
