Tina Turner Headlines Long Lost Concert Memory

(AP Photo/Lennox McLendon, File)
If it wasn’t for the worldwide web, the particulars of a festival-style rock concert I attended in 1970 would be forever lost to memory.  Before searching out the concert, I remembered only three things: it was held in San Jose, Calif., in an outdoor sports stadium; that The Ike and Tina Turner Revue headlined the show; and that the show was general admission. Though I had arrived early and had “front row” seats, I could not remember any of the other bands on the bill.
I remembered that Ike and Tina headlined because they played last and absolutely brought down the house. The recollection of their barn-burner set led me to the Revue’s touring record, which revealed that the show I attended had been called the All-College Music Festival, held on May 16, 1970, at San Jose State University’s Spartan Field now named  CEFCU (Citizens First Equity Credit Union) Stadium. ....

Ambivalence is the most accurate word I’ve found to explain my respect and disrespect for the military. I came of age during the Vietnam-era military draft that conscripted 2.2 million draftees. Of those in the military sent to Vietnam, 25% were draftees, and they accounted for over 30% of the deaths in that war. More than 2.6 million young men and nearly 7500 women were used in Vietnam in our effort to prevent the unification of that country under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh, who lived for brief periods in both the US and France, two countries that beset his land with war for over twenty years. ....

CSotD: Withdrawal pains The Daily Cartoonist

April 16, 2021
Let’s start by saying it could be worse: This isn’t a cartoon but a classic illustration by Elizabeth Butler of
The march to Jalalabad began with 4,000 soldiers and 12,000 civilian supporters, but was reduced to badly wounded ass’t surgeon William Brydon, alone on a pony that died of its own wounds shortly after arrival.
Granted, the British returned to level Kabul, put their chosen leader back in power and maintain him for about another decade, but there’s a reason Afghanistan is called “The Graveyard of Empires.”

Drew Sheneman (AMS) asks how we can exit gracefully, and the answer is simple: If there were a graceful way out, we’d have taken it long ago. ....
