Dark Sky Achievements In Southland Recognised With Bright Star Award

Great South Destination Development Manager Amie Young
was awarded the Dark Sky Project Bright Star Award at the
Royal Astronomical Society of NZ’s annual conference in
Wellington this month.
A ‘bright star’ recognises
contributions to the promotion of astronomy and dark skies
within New Zealand, and the award itself is in the shape of
an astrolabe, which is an ancient instrument used to make
astronomical measurements.
Amie has been working on
dark sky tourism opportunities for Southland since June 2017
through her role at Great South.

Dark skies will brighten lives in February festival

Dark skies will provide a beacon of light in an online festival next month.
This year’s virtual Cumbria Dark Skies Festival aims to light up February evenings with a spectacular array of online events celebrating the wonders of the night sky.
Organisers are convinced that the astronomers, astrophotographers, authors, filmmakers, lighting and design professionals, performers, poets and outdoor adventurers involved “will engage, enthral, wow and challenge us to think about darkness in a new light.”
The festival will be broadcast online events spanning 17 evenings next month, from Friday, February 5 to Sunday,February 21.
Bookings have now opened, giving you the opportunity to sign up and explore our universe and dark skies with renowned local, regional and national experts. ....
