Illegal, unreported and unregistered fishing vessels are about to be caught: Fisheries and Oceans Canada will employ advanced satellite technology to detect and track illegal fishing ships, known as “dark vessels.”
Dark vessels cost the global economy up to $30 billion a year and that’s the conservative estimate. They avoid detection by switching off their transponders and “going dark,” stealthily slipping by coastguards and maritime patrols.
According to Sean Wheeler, senior programme officer at the Fisheries and Oceans international program, these losses have the potential to destabilize governments, cause significant environmental damage and harm food stability in developing nations. ....

MDA Awarded Contract to Use Satellite Based Data Fusion and Analytics to Counter Illegal Fishing

MDA announced that it has beenawarded a three-year contract with the Government of Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Defence Research and Development Canada to use satellite technology to detect vessels engaging in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The contract will run for a period of three years.
The Dark Vessel Detection (DVD) program
uses satellite technology to locate and track vessels that have switched off their location transmitting devices in an attempt to evade monitoring, control and surveillance.
The DVD program will
combine data from multiple satellite missions, including MDA s RADARSAT-2, combined with space-based radio frequency collection and geo-spectrum analysis to assist in locating vessels involved in illegal fishing. MDA s advanced analytics, multi-sensor data fusion platform and expertise in maritime domain awareness will support the international community to combat the ....

Canadaâs new Dark Vessel Detection program is using cutting-edge satellite technology to find illegal fishing vessels that attempt to hide in plain sight stealing fish from waters around the world.
âDarkâ vessels switch off their location transmitters to avoid detection so they can engage in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, called IUU.
IUU fishing is a major contributor to the decline of fish stocks and marine habitat destruction, which undermines the livelihoods of legitimate fish harvesters.
Now, the governmentâs Fisheries and Oceans Canada, in partnership with the Department of National Defense and MDA (Canada’s largest space technology manufacturer which owns RADARSAT-2), has launched a new program that has already led to significant fines on five foreign vessels. ....
