G7 advanced economies have agreed to boost International Monetary Fund reserves by around $650 billion through a new allocation of the fund’s special drawing rights, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported on Wednesday.

Bank Indonesia has not only weathered the Covid-19 crisis, but done so while boosting its foreign exchange reserves to a new record high of $138 billion as of January 2021. The portfolio now represents around 12.5% of GDP, and could finance 10 months of imports – well above the international three-month minimum adequacy standard. While reserves fell in the first quarter of 2020, they remained relatively stable on an annual basis, growing as part of a long-term gradual upward trend. ....

After I moved to a Republican Senate district a few years back, I suggested to my representatives in Juneau that they should work to pass a comprehensive approach to our budget crisis, including new revenue. Oh no, was the response from my senator, it’s too early for that, we need to cut the budget first.
OK, maybe, but after they cut it as much as they apparently could and we started spending our reserves, they still refused to do anything we’re in a recession, we can’t impose new taxes now. When Gov. Bill Walker proposed an income tax, the majority didn’t try to amend it or suggest an alternative, but simply refused to consider it. And so we went through some $15 billion in reserves. ....

Bangladesh has formed a new fund with a portion of forex reserves to finance infrastructure projects.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the fund, known as Bangladesh Infrastructure Development Fund, via video conferencing from the Ganabhaban on Monday.
The first project to be financed through BIDF is the dredging of a channel for the Payra port in southern Bangladesh. A three-way loan agreement was signed for the project in Dhaka.
Hasina said: “As a developing country, we will have to finance our own projects. We will develop our country. That is our goal. And a lot of work needs to be done to accomplish that.” ....
