Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Reserve Bank governor Adrian Orr have batted away suggestions that the Government is encroaching on the independence of the central bank.
Since he became Finance Minister in 2017, Robertson has been accused of expanding his powers over the Reserve Bank and threatening its independence after he instructed the bank to consider employment and house prices, alongside inflation, when setting interest rates, and proposed giving the Finance Minister the ability to determine which types of lending the Reserve Bank can restrict with tools like loan-to-value ratios. ....
